January 18
Landscape Design
Sprigg Parker, Landscape Horticulturist & Designer of Larmore Landscape Associates, will present a program on basic principles of landscape
design. The program will include discussion of textures, sizes and scale of plants.

February 15
Shrubbery Pruning Clinic
Craig Mauney, Horticulture Extension Agent, Tim Henderson, Master Gardener Volunteer, and Stephen Greer, Commercial Horticulture Extension Agent, will conduct a clinic on Shrubbery Pruning. The clinic
will include demonstrations on pruning shrubbery in the Arboretum at Tanglewood.
Location: Entrance to Arboretum

March 21
Square Foot Gardening
Forsyth Extension Master Gardener Volunteer,
Michael Rahman will present a program on Square Foot Gardening. Rahman will be
discussing simple and easy ways to practice and set up a square foot garden at home.
Location: Pavilion in the Children’s Garden.

In conjunction with our Plant Sale the listed programs will be offered.
Dates for the Plant Sale : April 9 thru 14 (Monday
thru Saturday) with rain days on Wednesday, April 18th and 25th.

Backyard Birds
Janet Wright of Wright’s Bird Center will discuss how to feed and identify
local birds. Location: Arboretum Office

April 10
Organic Pest Control
Craig Mauney, Horticulture Extension Agent, will present a
program on organic pest control strategies. Integrated pest management will be the main
focus of this presentation. Location: Arboretum Office

April 11
Container Gardening
Ann Williams, Master Gardener Volunteer, will demonstrate
building container gardens using flowers, herbs and vegetables available from the sale.
Location: Arboretum Office

April 12
Native Plants
Ken Bridle, Piedmont Land Conservancy, will discuss identification of
native plants found in the Piedmont of North Carolina. Location: Arboretum Office

April 13
Growing Herbs
Ellen Reynolds of Beagle Ridge Herb Farm and Environmental Education
Center, will give a talk on the selection, care and maintenance of perennial and annual herbs.
Location: Herb Garden

April 14
Picky, Picky, Picky: Selecting Your Roses
Jimmy Speas, Winston Salem Rose Society,
will discuss selecting roses that perform well in our climate. Location: Arboretum Office

May 16
Pruning For Form and Structure
John Newman, owner of John Newman Garden Design,
will discuss pruning to balance architectural design, style and nature. Location: Arboretum
Office

June 20
Creations from Your Garden
Diane Demers-Smith, Artist, Floral Designer and Master
Gardener, will present a class on creating a cut flower arrangement from plants in your garden.
Location : Arboretum Office

July 18
Succulents in the Landscape
Bob Snyder will present a program on Succulents in
the Landscape. Bob is an avid gardener who has landscaped his yard with drought tolerant
plants. Snyder will discuss how succulents can be incorporated into North Carolina landscapes.

August 15
Fall Lawn Care
Chris Weavil, Tanglewood Park Maintenance Supervisor, will present
a class that will cover the care of cool season grasses in the Piedmont region. Fertilizer, lime,
seed choices, aeration and water requirements will be discussed. Location: Arboretum Office

September 19
Care of Indoor Plants
Danielle Mooney of House of Plants will discuss
the care of indoor plants to keep them as attractive as when they are purchased.
Location: Arboretum Office

October 17
Hypertufa
Connie Little, Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator at the Arboretum
at Tanglewood, and Mary Jac Brennan, Community Garden Coordinator, will lead a workshop
on creating hypertufa. Participants will make a hypertufa planter that they can take home.
There will be a fee for this 2 hour workshop. Class size is limited and pre registration is required.
Class will be from 10:00 -12:00. Location: Arboretum Office

November 7
Secrets of Growing Orchid
David Bare, Horticulturist with Reynolda Gardens and
garden writer with the Winston Salem Journal, will present a program on growing orchids at
home. Location: Arboretum Office

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are always needed as we continue to expand our children's and adult educational programs.  Docents are needed to give group tours as well as Curators for our many gardens.If you would like to volunteer please contact Craig Mauney arboretum Director @ 336-703-2850
