Blue Green Conifers

Three blue-green conifers:
Stover Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana ‘Stover’)
Gray Owl Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana ‘Gray Owl’)
Blue Ice Arizona Cypress (Cupressus arizonica ‘Blue Ice’)Blue Conifer

The conifer garden is beautiful in all seasons. Perhaps its
beauty is most appreciated is winter when all its trees and
shrubs are covered with needles of different shades of green,
blue, and yellow. There are no bare branches in this winter
garden.
A walkway of bricks engraved with the names of loved ones
(here and gone), beloved pets, garden clubs, and special
occasions winds through the conifers. Walking along it
recently, I was struck by the blue-green color of three conifers.

Stover Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana ‘Stover’) is a cultivar of
our native Eastern Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana). Stover is
a narrow symmetrical shrub, which grows 10 to 12 feet tall by
4 feet wide. It has intense blue gray foliage all year round. Like
its parent it prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is attacked
by cedar apple rust and bagworms.

Gray Owl Redcedar (Juniperus virginiana ‘Gray Owl’) is another
cultivar of our native Eastern Redcedar. This one has a low
spreading habit, growing 5 feet tall by 7 feet wide. The foliage
is silvery blue.

Blue Ice Arizona Cypress (Cupressus arizonica ‘Blue Ice’) is
powdery gray-blue to silver blue to icy blue. It likes hot, dry
sites, full sun, and well-drained soil. This pyramidal cypress
