Japanese AnemoneĀ (Anemone x hybrida)
The Japanese Anemones are the queens of the autumn garden. When most flowers have faded away to seed, these Anemones start blooming and bloom until frost. They hold their flowers high on tall 30 to 48 inch wiry stems. The fall breezes have them dancing in the bright clear days of autumn. The pure white flowers of 'Honorine Jobert' jump out of the shadows. The Japanese Anemone also comes in shades of pink. They prefer well-drained soil and partial shade. The flowers come in single, semi-double, and double petal cultivars. The tallest ones need support to keep the tall graceful stems upright.
The Arboretum has two varieties of Japanese Anemone, a white one and a pink one. They adorn the rock foundation of our greenhouse and can be found in the shade garden. Both are beautiful this time of year and would make a lovely addition to the fall garden at your home. They are easy to grow and once established will flourish and provide you with abundant blossoms from late summer until frost.
